The first Eghalanda pioneers arrived in 1863 in Puhoi, and shortly afterwards several other families settled in the Ohaupo-Te Rore district in the Waikato. Of the 49 original Bohemian family names, only 26 seem to have survived, the remainder having for one reason or another vanished due to marriage, not having children and a few moved completely away at an early stage without a trace.
Apart from the passengers on the first ship, the ‘War Spirit’ (l863), there were those on the ‘Liverpool’ (l866), the ‘Queen Bee” (1872), the ‘Friedeberg’ (1875) and the ‘Shakespeare’ and ‘Terpsichore’ (1876). Those 6 ships were not the only vessels that brought passengers for Puhoi (or Ohaupo). Other families, more especially those leaving from Germany came independently of the earlier groups and still others came via Australia.

The following original Puhoi BOHEMIAN surnames still appear either locally or elsewhere in New Zealand.
BAYER; BECHER (BECKER); BERGER; FITZTHUM; HENDL; KARL; KRIPPNER; MULTRUS; PAPESCH; PAUL; RAUCH; RAUNER; REISIMA; REMIGER; RUSSEK; SCHEDEWY; SCHISCHKA; SCHOLLUM; SOUKUP (SEACUP); SITTAUER; STRAKA; TOLHOPF; TURNWALD; WECH; WENZLICK and ZANK

Of the remaining surnames these seem to have disappeared:-
DOBNER - married a German immigrant in 1864.
FRITSCH - 2 sons born respectively in 1890, 1893 but no details after that time.
GLATZ – 3 daughters married and name gone.
GLEYE - at Ohaupo, a German immigrant married Catherine TURNWALD and the name appears to have died out with the marriage of their daughter to Charles RAYNER. The daughter died in 1948.
GRUBER – 3 daughters married and name gone
HEIDLER – 1 daughter married and name gone.
JEDLICKA - 2 boys born in 1881 and 1893 who could have carried on the name but no details available. Two girls are known to have left NZ probably for England as it is known that one is buried there. The family was still in Puhol c.1880.
JESENSKY - Returned to Germany in the 1890's
KAES - gone in the 1880s through intermarriage. The name ENGELHARDT came into the KAES family through marriage. 3 sons no known descendants.
KREIM - no details available.
KROHN - Charles KROHN married Theresia SCHUSTER. The name KROHN has since disappeared through marriage. 1 son no known descendants.
PANKRATZ – 5 daughters married and name gone.
PITTNER – 2 daughters married and name gone.
PLATZ – 3 sons but no known descendants.
PODLESAK (BOTELSAK) - 4 girls of that name came to NZ, Three married into local Eghalanda families, one married a Scot and went to the South Island. A fifth sister did not come to NZ but married a SCHISCHKA in Bohemia and went to the USA.
SCHOBER - married and name gone.
SCHEIDLER – 2 sons but no known descendants.
SCHOTT – 3 single girls married and name gone.
STILLER – remained single and died during World War 1.
VLACH - was single and was accidentally killed shortly after arrival in 1863.
