Lord Burleigh
A 647 ton 3 masted Barque with a sheathed wooden hull built in 1853 in Sunderland, England and registered in Sunderland.

It sailed from London commanded by Captain F.W. SMITH on the 8th November 1859 carrying the KRIPPNER, PANKRATZ and SCHEIDLER families – 13 Bohemians in all - who arrived in Auckland on 22nd March 1860, 3 years prior to the establishment of the Puhoi Settlement.

These 3 family groups were:
Martin KRIPPNER (aged 42), his wife Emily - nee LONGDILL (41), sons Fritz (7), Hermann (5), Rudolf (4) and daughter Maria (3). Their niece Maria KRIPPNER (11) was also with them as was Martin KRIPPNER’s younger brother, Hans KRIPPNER (33).

Joseph PANKRATZ (26) and his wife Margarethe - nee STILLER, (26).

Martin SCHEIDLER (aged 32), wife Dorothea - nee NATH (25) and son Joseph.

War Spirit
A 1,234 ton sailing ship. The 'War Spirit' under the command of Captain J.R. LUCKES sailed from Gravesend, London on 12th Mar 1863 and among the 222 passengers on departure were the 82 Bohemians who were 1st (and largest) group destined for Puhoi.

13 couples with young children:
Thomas BECHER (aged 30), his wife Anna - nee PODLESAK (25), daughter Anna (5). And son Andreas (3).

Peter GLATZ (aged 55), wife Margarethe - nee TURNWALD (45) and 3 daughters, Cecelia (15), Anna (5) and Dorothea (3).

Wenzl KAES (aged 42), wife Maria - nee WOLLER (42) , son Martin (5) and daughter Maria (2). Another daughter, Annie was born on the voyage.

Joseph KARL (aged 38), wife Anna - nee TURNWALD (36), 5 sons, Johann (10), Joseph (8), Charles (7), Wenzl (4) and Andrew (2). Their sixth son Edward was born on the voyage.

Michael KRIPPNER (41), wife Barbara - nee SCHISCHKA (33), daughters Anna(11),Theresia(8) and son Johann (7)

Joseph PAUL (aged 38), wife Margarethe and daughters Anna (8) and Katherina (3)

Martin SCHISCHKA (aged 65) without his wife Anna - nee MEISER who did not come to NZ. His grown up daughters by her, Anna (40) and Maria (31), were classified as single women. He also brought his son Stefan (5) by his 2 nd wife Maria- nee CZECHOVA but likewise Maria stayed in Bohemia.

Lorenz TURNWALD (37) wife Anna - nee WACKER, (37), sons Bartolomaus (13), Lorenz (12), Joseph (8) and daughters Katharina (5) and Elizabeth (2). Lorenz, the husband, was accidently killed on the voyage 12 days before arrival in NZ).

3 other couples:
Johann RAUNER (50) and wife Anna - nee MASCHEK. (Their grown up children Martin (24), Johann (19) and Catherine ( 14) also came classified as single).

Johann SCHOLLUM (21) and wife Elizabeth - nee HARTZEREN (24)

Anton TURNWALD (25) and wife Barbara - nee BEDEN (22)

13 single men: Wenzl BAYER (27), Wenzl FITZTHUM (25), Johann KREIM (went to Waikato), Johann KROHN (26) from Germany, Martin RAUNER (24), Johann RAUNER (19), Wenzl REISIMA (!8) (went to Waikato), Johann SOUKUP (16) , Paul STRAKA (33), Martin TOLHOPF (18), Wenzl TOLHOPF (17), Joseph VLACH and Benedict REMIGER (12).

and 10 single women : Maria BOTELSAK (PODLESAK) (23), Elizabeth BOTELSAK (PODLESAK) (15), Anna DOBNER, Cecelia GLATZ (15), Catherine RAUNER (14), Barbara RUSSEK (14), Anna SCHISCHKA (40), Maria SCHISCHKA (31) , Anna SCHOBER (32) and Theresia SCHUSTER (23).

The 'War Spirit' reached Auckland, New Zealand on 27th June 1863 after a 107 day voyage which was considered fast for the time.

Liverpool
A 1454 ton 3 masted Barque with a sheathed in "yellow metal" wooden hull built in 1833 in Saint John, New Foundland but repaired in 1843. It was registered in Liverpool, England.  The 'Liverpool' commanded by Captain Hugh McEWEN sailed from Gravesend, London on 8th November 1865 Among the 192 passengers were the 2nd Group of 31 Bohemians headed for Puhoi.

The 4 couples with children were: Lorenz SCHISCHKA (aged 42), wife Rosalie - nee SCHINDLER, (42), sons Vincent (20), John (13),Christian (8), Joseph (2) and daughters Anna (16), Catherine (11), and Theresa (6).

Johann WECH (39), wife Anna - nee SCHOTT (34), daughters Rosalia (15), Maria (12) and sons Johann (11), Joseph (5) and Mathias (2).

Joseph WECH (24), wife Dorothea - nee SCHOTT (26), son Joseph (6) and daughter Magdalene (3). A further son John was born on the voyage out.

Johann WENZLICK (30), wife Anna - nee PLESCHER (20) and sons Vincent (3) and Johann (1)

2 single men: Vincent PLESCHER (16) and Gregor WENZLICK (26).

and 5 single women : Mary PLESCHER, Margaret PLESCHER (25), Maria SCHOTT (18), Maria WENZLICK (32) and Anna WENZLICK (23).

The 'Liverpool' reached Auckland, New Zealand on 5th March 1866 after a voyage of 117 days - an average passage

Queen Bee
A full rigged 726 ton 3 masted Barque with a wooden hull built in 1852 in Sunderland, England. The wooden hull was sheathed in "felt and yellow metal (Muntz)" in 1857 and the ship was registered in Dumfries, Scotland.

The 'Queen Bee' under the command of Captain WILLIAMS with 126 passengers aboard sailed out of London on 20th July 1872. Included among these were the 17 Bohemians on their way to join those already at Puhoi who made up the 3rd Group.

1 couple with children: Anton SCHISCHKA (aged 63), his wife Elizabeth - nee SCHINDLER (38), and daughters Maria (14), Anna (6) and Katharina.

1 couple without children: Freidrich ZANK and his wife Elizabeth.

5 single men: Anton HEIDLER (39), Joseph SCHOLLUM (26), Wenzl SCHOLLUM (16), Johann STILLER (32) and Adalbert WENZLICK (34).

and 5 single women: Eva BAYER (18), Maria FISCHER (23),Dorothea SCHOLLUM (22),Catherine TURNWALD (39) and her young daughter Catherine (2) who was later renamed Mary Anne GLEYE

The 'Queen Bee' reached Auckland, New Zealand on 26th October 1872 after a ‘fast’ voyage of just 102 days.

Five years later while en route to Nelson, the 'Queen Bee' sank after running ashore on Farewell Spit at the entrance to Cook Strait between the North and South Islands of New Zealand. Fortunately only 1 life was lost.

Friedeburg
A 795 ton gross iron hulled sailing ship with 2 decks, built in 1869 by A Stephen & Sons in Glasgow, Scotland and registered in Hamburg, Germany.

The 'Friedeburg' commanded by Captain E KROPPER left from Hamburg in Germany on the 10th May 1875 with 297 NZ Government immigrants These included the 4th Group of 12 Bohemians coming to Puhoi.

1 couple with children: Joseph HENDL (aged 27), his wife Margaretha - nee PODLESAK (32) and daughters Anna (7) and Maria (1)

A widow with children: Maria GRUBER - nee WECH (44) with daughters Maria (17), Anna (10) and Catherine (4),

I single man: John WECH (20)

and 3 single women: Katherine FRITSCH (21), Anna GAUGA (18) and Anna REMIGER (16).

Napier in Hawke Bay was the Friedeburg’s arrival port in New Zealand and the passengers disembarked there on 24th August 1875, 105 days after commencing the voyage.

Shakespeare
This was a 657 ton barque whose wooden hull was sheathed in zinc. It was built in 1838 in Restigouche, New Brunswick, Canada but underwent major repairs in 1847 and again in 1855 and was registered in Sunderland, England. This 1875 voyage to New Zealand was probably its last as the replacement, a four masted iron ship also called the ‘Shakespeare’, was being built in Short Bros’ Sunderland yards and was finally launched the following year in May 1876.

The original 'Shakespeare' left from Hamburg in Germany on the 7th Oct 1875 and among the passengers were the 30 Bohemians forming the 5th contingent (but third largest) headed for Puhoi.

Jacob MULTRUS (aged 37), his wife Anna - nee KOHALOTTA (24) and son Anton (1)

Michael PAUL (56), his wife Maria - nee KICKSTEIN (41), sons Joseph (24), Wenzl (18), Johann (16) , Christian (8) and daughters Maria (11), Anna (4) and Veronica (1).

Johann PLATZ (32), wife Katherina (31) - nee STOLZBORD along with 3 children by his previous marriage to Lena BAYER who did not come. They were sons Wenzl (9) and Joseph (4) and daughter Maria (6).

Anton SCHEDEWY (aged 33), wife Margarethe - nee RUSSEK (32), daughters Elizabeth (11), Maria (6), Theresa (5) and son Martin (2).

Wenzl SCHISCHKA (32), wife Margarethe - nee BREHM, (25), daughter Margarethe (3) and son Anton (2).

Joseph SITTAUER (31), wife Margarethe - nee SCHISCHKA (26) and sons Wenzl (3) and Joseph (1)

Also aboard was Peter ANDERSON from Sweden (who later married Mary PANKRATZ).

The 'Shakespeare' reached Wellington, New Zealand on 23rd Jan 1876 after a 118 day passage.

Terpsichore
This 3 masted sailing vessel with Captain Frank KHOLER in command left Hamburg, Germany on 15th November 1875 with 395 passengers aboard, 11 of whom were destined for Puhoi.

2 couples with children:

Joseph JEDILISCHKA (JEDLICKA) (29), wife Maria - nee HENDL (25) and daughter Maria (1).

Joseph PAPESCH (aged 42), wife Anna - nee MENZL (35), Sons Hermann (12), Nicolaus (11), Wenzl (4) and daughters Katrina (9), Franzisca (6) and Anna (1).

The Terpsichore arrived in Wellington on 15th March 1876 after a lengthy 120 day voyage.

Other Arrivals

Petrus BAYER, wife Magdalena - nee LEDERER and son Josef came via Australia (after 1871) but trans Tasman steerage passenger lists were not preserved.

Other single men were Julius BERGER, Eric DAHLBERG, Christian GRAF, Martin FRITSCH and Johann KREIM and single women Maria BENES and Veronica BREHM.

The BILLING family who came from Dublin in Ireland, Archibald BILLING, his wife Elizabeth - nee GILLIS with nine children arrived on the ‘Ida Zeigler' in 1861. Several of these children married into Puhoi families.
